The health and well-being of the students in USD 413 Chanute Public Schools is our top priority.  The current influenza/illness outbreak across our state and nation has certainly heightened our sense of awareness about student/staff health.  The district is watching this issue closely, like we do every year, and are using proactive and precautionary measures to ensure that we have the healthiest environment for all students.  Our custodial staff is working extra diligently to sanitize the schools and our teachers are working with students to remind them of healthy hygiene habits to mitigate any additional spreading of illness.

We ask for parent and community cooperation during this time to help ensure that we keep the illnesses to a minimum.  The following are building policies as well as suggestions from health organizations that we would ask that everyone follow to help us maintain a healthy environment:

  • Children having a temperature elevated above 100 degrees and/or vomiting need to USdstay home from school. The child may return to school after being free of fever and vomiting for 24 hours without fever reducing medication.

  • Keep students home that are vomiting or have diarrhea.

  • Keep students home that have pink or crusty eyes.

  • Call the doctor when illness symptoms persist.

  • Talk to your students about appropriate hygiene habits such as:

    • Covering mouths when coughing and sneezing

    • Washing hands regularly

    • Utilizing facial tissues when necessary

We are seeing that some of these “bugs” are lasting anywhere from 5-10 days.  Please keep students home while they exhibit persistent symptoms which is in the best interest of their health and for the health of all other students and staff who are in our buildings every day.
