7TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES WITH MS. DUNCAN! This year we will be studying many exciting topics in seventh grade Social Studies. First, second and third quarters we will be studying Civics, Government, and Economics . Second semester we will be studying Kansas History. The following information will apply to all Social Studies classes. Study Materials Students are expected to bring their social studies books, if they have been assigned a book, folders with paper, daily geography spiral notebook, and pencils to class every day. Students will be notified if they need to bring special supplies such as colored pencils, scissors, and etc. one day ahead of time, but it might be handy to have a zipper pouch to carry with them at all times. Students should keep a folder for social studies materials. This folder should be used for keeping notes, vocabulary, and homework assignments. A daily geography file folder, provided by the teacher, will be kept by the student in the social studies class. Daily Geography Daily geography questions will be given in each social studies class period. These questions are designed to help students develop and utilize basic geography skills. The student in the social studies class will keep a daily geography file folder, which will be provided by the teacher. Students will use this file folder every day to record answers and keep their answers to the geography questions. Folders will be graded in class every two to three weeks. Point totals for this time period usually range from twenty to thirty points. It is important that students keep up with the daily geography assignments in this folder. Students will be notified in advance, and are expected to have their completed geography folder ready to grade on the due date, for full credit. Homework, Projects, and Tests Students are usually given some class time to begin or work on homework assignments. We will be doing social studies projects throughout the year. Projects should be completed within the allotted time period; reasonable amounts of time are always assigned to the projects. Students should be conscious of deadlines. Class time is always allotted for time-consuming projects; students are expected to utilize their class time in a productive way. Project grades usually reflect a student’s effort. Homework and projects should reflect the student’s work and abilities. It is wonderful for a parent to be enthusiastic about projects and assignments; however, seventh and eighth graders are learning to work more independently, and their work should reflect their abilities. Research assignments are often difficult tasks. Students need to be very careful not to plagiarize when doing writing assignments. Research facts should be stated and rephrased into a students own thoughts and words. Tests are usually given at the end of each unit. Most tests will be preceded with a study guide or review session. Students should utilize all materials available to them to prepare for tests. At times students will need to keep graded homework assignments to help them study for tests. For example, vocabulary terms are often graded and kept in student’s folders for further use.
