The new cardio room at Chanute High School is getting a work out from the students wanting to use it.

“We are starting to see about 30 people per day, students and staff, throughout the after school hours,” said Michelle DiLisio, CHS physical education teacher and PEP coordinator.

The center opened in November for a couple hours on three afternoons a week. Due to demand, those hours were extended.

The CHS cardio room just south of the small gymnasium is now open from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Inside are eight treadmills, seven cross-trainers (ellipticals), two recumbent bikes, two upright bikes, and two summit trainers.

“The most popular machines are the treadmills and the cross-trainers (ellipticals),” DiLisio said. “A lot of students are doing a lot of abdominal work on the fitness balls in there also.”

Studies show that three out of every 10 Kansas children are overweight.

“This is the perfect opportunity to help our students become physically fit,” DiLisio said.

Due to the size of the CHS physical education classes, the cardio room can’t accommodate enough students to be used during the school day.

“However, with our new “Comet Time” (within the school day schedule) the room is booked up for the next three weeks,” DiLisio said.

To be eligible to use the cardio room, students must get a release signed by their parent and sign an agreement to follow the center’s rules and complete training on the equipment.
