Local and federal dollars have given K-12 physical education teachers in Chanute Public Schools the ability to revamp their programs and curb the rampant increase in obesity among young people.

A $300,000 Carol M. White Physical Education Grant awarded by the U.S. Dept. of Education Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools - one of two such grants awarded in 2006 - coupled with facility improvements by USD 413 funded the new Get Fit! program.

The funds enabled:

  • Teachers to rewrite the K-12 physical education curriculum, goals and objectives
  • The purchase of new equipment that encourages all students to participate actively in physical education activities

With a Get Fit! goal of increasing the number of students in grades K-12 who meet state standards for physical education, the program included:

  • Fitness circuits, equipment and supplies for elementary, middle and high school students
  • Supplies for PE classes and PE activities at all levels
  • Afterschool and summer activities
  • Integration with the district’s wellness activities
