Traditional
Values in Chanute Public Schools:
The school district's mission requires
a high priority be placed upon introducing, modeling, practicing,
teaching and expecting behavior and attitudes that reflect traditional
values. Someone said, "For good or evil, school inevitably affects
the values of the young." Chanute Public Schools attempt to
affect the values of students in a positive way.
The school district's learning climate must exemplify kindness,
fairness, and respect for others and ourselves. High standards
of conduct must be modeled by all employees and expected of students.
Through our Healthy Living Curriculum, other traditional curriculum
areas (i.e., social studies, English, math, science and the arts),
and extra curricular activities, the school district proposes to
emphasize the following list of values:
Courtesy, Honesty, Fair Play,
Respect
for Self, Respect for Others, Promptness,
Responsibility, Dependability,
Work Ethic,
Sincerity, Critical Inquiry, Neatness,
Patriotism,
Helpfulness, Teamwork,
Voulenteerism, Competence, Belonging,
Citizenship,
Truth, Rule of Law,
Due Process, Rational Consent, Loyalty,
Justice,
Self Discipline, Knowledge,
Objectivity, Equality of Opportunity,
Tolerance of Diversity, Reasonable Argument,
Pride in a Job Well
Done
U.S. Attorney General, John Ashcroft, said, "There are some
strategic values that should be universally held. And these values
ought to be taught everywhere, yes, even in our public schools.
Let me list just a few of these values for you: 1) It's better
to build something than to tear something down; 2) It’s better
to earn something than to steal something; 3) It’s better
to be independent than to be dependent; 4) It’s better to
tell the truth than it is to tell a lie; 5) It’s better to
be on time than it is to be late; 6) It’s better to make
judgments based on facts rather than on prejudice; 7) It’s
better to respect other people than it is to disrespect them. These
are not things that divide America...We ought to be teaching these
values in our schools."
Chanute Public Schools will make use of delivery systems other
than curriculum to fulfill its obligation in preserving the aforementioned
traditional values. Some of these delivery systems might include:
honor codes, community service opportunities or requirements, code
of ethics, emphasis on the role of persons of history in establishing
America's values system, etc. Extra curricular activities are available
for the development of sound, positive values.
Aristotle once said: "In order to teach good character, expose
children to good character, and invite its imitation."
Chanute Public Schools believe we cannot have value-free education.
Mankind makes choices daily that are value laden. Chanute Public
Schools will teach and model the traditional values accepted and
practiced by our community, state and nation.
