Unified School District #413
Retention Policy:
It is the policy of the Chanute Public Schools that
retention procedures for
any student
will adhere
to the following guidelines:
1) The teacher or counselor should first notify the building principal
if a possibility of retention exists due to failing grades in core
subjects (Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, or Social Studies)
or if a parent asks about retention.
2) The teacher or counselor will refer the student to the Student
Improvement Team. The parent or guardian will be a member of the
Student Improvement Team.
3) The Student Improvement Team will provide the Light's Retention
Scale for a teacher to complete as part of the Student Improvement
process. The team will also review other relevant data in order
to make a recommendation that is best suited for the student.
4) The decision for retention should be a cooperative effort between
the parents, the teacher and the administration.
5) The final decision rests with the building administrator. The
parents may appeal the final decision to the superintendent.
